A twist on the classic WipEout experience. Compete head-to-head with another pilot for the first place in a race where weapons are disabled. The gap between you and your opponent is displayed on the HUD.
Head to Head was featured in WipEout Pulse and was cut from WipEout HD during production.
This mode is available in both Racebox and the campaign grids. ( add screenshots or something!)
Head to Head was not officially featured in WipEout HD.
It is possible to make the mode playable by modifying the game's assets. Edit the file:
data00.psarc/data/plugins/frontend/gui/racebox_definition.xml
Around line 42 of the document, replace the tags
<aEntry> and </aEntry>
with their correct spellings:
<Entry> and </Entry>
Upon restarting the game, Head to Head will become available in Racebox.
The mode is playable and mostly identical to how it appeared in WipEout Pulse. The distance indicator HUD element is reused from WipEout Pulse. Additionally, if the HUD style is set to 2097 or WIP3OUT, the game freezes upon loading into the race.
In the 2008 Beta build of WipEout HD ( link!), the mode is available in Racebox without having to modify the game's assets. This may imply that the mode was scrapped before/around the time the game failed epilepsy tests (
link the appropriate section of wohd development!), since the other HUD skins were added after that point and were never fixed to work with Head to Head.
While the mode doesn't directly appear in WipEout 2048, some Campaign events feature similar conditions: Single Races with only one opponent, though there isn't a special HUD for it, and the pilots are allowed to use Missiles.
